Memorandum

Subject: Broken down escalators
Date: February 5, 2024
The reason for this memo is to inform you about the importance of the escalators considering how students have to get to their classes and must be handled with the proper precautions.
Summary
In the NAC I have noticed a continuous pattern of the escalators not functioning properly and students having to settle with only one escalator in the first floor of the NAC. Not to mention the other escalators not working along other floors and other worldwide escalators have better maintenance unlike the CCNY maintenance.
Discussion
There must be a reason for the broken down escalators, why do they not function properly like other escalators? Does CCNY not have the funding? Or is this caused by unknown sources?.Compared to the MTA, there are tons of stations with escalators and they never seem to be broken down, once in a while but not all the time. Considering how there are tons of people who carry heavy things, litter, and the escalators themselves don’t look like the type to have high maintenance.
Students want to get to their classes early and the only way is through the entrance of the NAC with only 1 functioning escalator with many students gathering and squishing into each other. Teachers and students do get late to their classes, which would result in the teachers and students’ time being wasted. Another reason why escalators break down is due to students running on the escalator which could result in internal damage in the escalator. Not to mention that things would get stuck between the entrance of the escalator and the end of an escalator, where the sharp claws are at.
Recommendation
I believe we need a newer model of escalators with the many broken down escalators that have now turned into stairs, even if they’re turned into stairs then there is no point in having an escalator due to stairs existing near the elevators. The escalators in CCNY seem to be outdated due to the fact that escalators receive more repairs once they’ve reached about 20 to 25 years and CCNY escalators have been receiving lots of repairs. Which is why newer model escalators would be a possible solution to this considering how CCNY probably keeps wasting on repaired escalators each month and this could stack up and cut the budget of the college.
I recommend opening other entrances of the building which result in students getting to the third or second floor more quicker and not having to rely on the entrance that is on the bottom of the NAC. One of many causes of broken down escalators is littering, so I would recommend putting trash bins near the escalators for students to throw their trash, since some trash can sometimes be dangerous within an escalator and cause it to be broken down. Not to mention there should be a sign that explains the dangers of running on an escalator and keep the cooperation of students at CCNY.
I hope we can get this matter done and would like to keep in touch if anything else occurs at CCNY, to improve the quality and atmosphere of this campus.
